In seeing $3 gas prices this morning, it gave me a little motivation to do some calculations this morning. I basically wanted to compare prices using rail, flight, and car on a trip from Altoona to Indianapolis (I didn't really have a reason for choosing Indianapolis other than I'm going there in November). Here's what I found (roundtrip):
Rail (Amtrak) - $199
Fly (kayak)- $215
Drive (This is the price of gas, assuming a 25/MPG vehicle): $110
Bus (Greyhound) - $98
The cost on the bus was less than what I had anticipated and it actually got me to Indy in fairly good time (11 hours). In this scenario, I have to ask what the hell is going on with Amtrak? Given that the amount of time it would take (nearly 24 hours each way), I can't imagine anyone not paying the $15 extra to fly. This isn't the first time I have noticed this, I've looked at taking the train to Pittsburgh, Erie, New York, etc.. and the price has been extremely high for the return in all cases. I know Amtrak is in bad fiscal shape, but the times that we are in provide them an oppurtunity to capture additional market share, and they don't seem interested in doing so.
