2 Cool Web Apps

Meebo - Have trouble running IM because a firewall? Check this out, it mirrors IM applications from a browser.

Writely - I'm not sure what I would use this for yet, but it's a word processor embedded in a web site. Could be useful for writing documents that I need access to elsewhere or documents that I need to share easily.

This is from the Mike Tech Show. Download the zip file and unzip it to your USB drive and have a "ready-to-go" USB utility drive. Includes Portable Firefox, a ton of anti-virus and anti-spyware apps, PDF reader, PuTTY, media players, and a CD or DVD burning software. I always wanted to put one of these together.

Busy Busy

I know things have been quiet at the sector as of late, but between family time, work, teaching, consulting, reroofing the house, PT trips, and vacation, I've been a little busy the last month. Combine that with an error in moveable type that was preventing me from posting, I guess this blog has kind of died down. I just got back from Philly for part of the Internet2 member's meeting which proved interesting, some good contacts were made.

I've been so busy I haven't even been able to watch a Steelers game yet which really sucks considering I didn't miss a single game last year. I have last week's game on DVR, so I'm hoping to at least see an abbreviated version of their excellent play from last week. I'm 4-0 in my fantasy football league, but am still getting no respect from the other owners. I can't wait until I walk away with the championship this year.

Searching for New Konfabulator Stock Ticker

Does anyone know of alternative stock tickers for Konfabulator to replace the one that comes with the program? I'm finding the default one to take up much too much real estate for its function and adding any more stocks is impossible because it would just make the widget too big. I'm kind of shocked that there aren't more widgets devoted to this function, considering there are widgets that do just about everything else.

Another Cool Google Maps App

Check out this app. It shows you census information for any area using a Google Maps interface. I'm loving all of the cool apps that Google Maps has enabled.

The FCC is looking for private volunteers (ie. Wireless Internet Providers, etc...) who can aid in the Katrina efforts. This link provides the technical details, what they are looking for, and how to volunteer.

I just upgraded to Moveable Type 3.2. Looks like several changes have been made to the interface, will have to check it out in more detail once I find some time.

Mass Transit

In seeing $3 gas prices this morning, it gave me a little motivation to do some calculations this morning. I basically wanted to compare prices using rail, flight, and car on a trip from Altoona to Indianapolis (I didn't really have a reason for choosing Indianapolis other than I'm going there in November). Here's what I found (roundtrip):

Rail (Amtrak) - $199
Fly (kayak)- $215
Drive (This is the price of gas, assuming a 25/MPG vehicle): $110
Bus (Greyhound) - $98

The cost on the bus was less than what I had anticipated and it actually got me to Indy in fairly good time (11 hours). In this scenario, I have to ask what the hell is going on with Amtrak? Given that the amount of time it would take (nearly 24 hours each way), I can't imagine anyone not paying the $15 extra to fly. This isn't the first time I have noticed this, I've looked at taking the train to Pittsburgh, Erie, New York, etc.. and the price has been extremely high for the return in all cases. I know Amtrak is in bad fiscal shape, but the times that we are in provide them an oppurtunity to capture additional market share, and they don't seem interested in doing so.

Priorities

This is a good read and another example of a domestic project that has suffered due to the Iraq war and this time its costing lives.

Say what you like, but shouldn't we be taking care of problems at home before we police the world?
